When a Buddhist "invites the bell to ring" is this an act of nonviolence?

In Buddhist prayer ceremonies, instead of ringing the bell, they "invite it to ring."
Is this to show a spirit of nonviolence?

I guess. It's definitely a non violent act unless 'inviting a bell to ring' involves kicking the crap out of a homeless guy or something. Actually, even if he rang the bell with an uzi, it would still be non-violent. It's a bell. It's not a bell made out of living humans or animals , is it ?
