anyone know what that is? I have had my dogs for over 7 years now. One is a black lab mix and one is a shep/chow mix. The past month, they have started releasing an odor when they come into the house from the backyard. At first I thought maybe it was just cause they were hot, but it has cooled off now and they still do it. The odor is horrendous. I have even tried bathing them with special shampoos and the odor still happens. It only happens when they come into the house from being outside. It ususally goes away after about 30 minutes or so. Can anyone help me with this?

do they live in the house or live in the yard?
Just thinking, it sounds live you may be describing the eye watering, bile inducing stench of anac gland secretion, which can happen when a) the anal sacs are full (usually as the diet doesn't contain enough fibre, and the dogs always have soft stools, therefore, not expressing this fluid on each motion), or b) through fear / shock , and if they are nervous about coming into the house, as they live outside, then they could be expressing it then?
Just a thought - I can't think of anything else that smells that bad, otherwise.

did they get sprayed with a skunks fart ? try watching them and see what they get up to while outside!

Cynthia,

Unfortunately, I have never had a dog that didn't have this to happen. It is something in their body chemistry. If there is anything that you can do about it, I haven't found a vet yet that knows about it! LOL.
We just have to love 'em anyway, stench and all!

I'll be watching this post to see if someone else knows something that we don't! Good luck!
