When should I tell my new employer that I'm going on vacation?

I just got hired today at a restaurant, and I was so nervous, that I forgot to mention that I'm going to be away for the month of July as I'm volunteering in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. I wish I hadn't signed up now, but it's too late to get my money back. I've been looking for a job forever, and this is just really bad timing...
Should I wait until I've worked for 3 weeks, or tell them now? Also, how should I tell them?

The job is part-time, nights and week-ends, probably 3-4 shifts a week
 
Tell them now so they can plan - if you wait, you probably will not have a job to come home to. Hopefully, if you tell them it is a volunteer opportunity to help those less fortunate, they will understand (but be very realistic - you are screwing them over and they may not appreciate it).
