When taping spliced wires, do you have to tape the wires separately?

I'm doing a simple splicing job on my fiance's headphones. We disagree on whether or not, when there are 2 or more wires present, the wires must be taped separately before they are taped together. To be more precise: do I need to put the electrical tape around the red wire by itself, then another piece around the white wire by itself, before I taped them as a whole?

It would be a really good idea to so you dont run a risk of shorting the wires out to eachother.

Extra precaution is always a good idea.
