When you list an item for free/sale on Craigslist, do you have to remove it...

...when it's gone? Newbie to Craigslist. I see that a posting has the original date. How am I to know if it is still available?

It usually automatically deletes itself after a certain period. But you can delete it yourself if you'd rather not get people posting you about the item.
