This probably won't be a brilliant answer but we had a big family holiday in Bordeaux a couple of years ago and found that nearly all the vineyards are visitor friendly, they sell alot of wine that way. It's great for river sports too, we had a really good day kayaking on the dordogne (i think that was the river) As for accommodation, we surfed the internet and rented out a converted farmhouse, it had it's own pool, tennis court and boules area. There was 10 of us that went so it worked out at only £100 each to stay there, it was lively. I don't know how many of you are going but if you have transport gites and converted barns etc are good for renting out, that way you can also come and go as you please.
