I used to work in a malt shop in college. That malt shop was the whole reason I gained my "freshman 15"! My favorite flavor was Dreamsicle with two huge scoops of malt powder.
I absolutely love malts, and would like to be able to make them in my home from time to time, but have yet to find malt powder that tastes like the stuff we used to use at the college malt shop. I remember, the powder we used to use at the restaurant came in big silver "ziplock"-type bags. They were purchased at wholesale, of course, by the restaurant (which is now closed and has since been torn down - sad).
The stuff I can buy at the supermarket tastes horrible...I can't describe it, it just doesn't taste anything like good old, traditional malt powder that you'd get at a soda fountain. I believe it's Carnation brand.
If anyone can tell me where I can purchase yummy, old-fashioned malt powder to use at home, you would make me very happy!
