where can i get free codes to unlock my t-mobile phone?

I just bought a tmobile phone from a local cell phone place. i called tmobile but they want me to purchase a plan before they unlock it. they said that i can find someone who has or had service through them and they would unlock it then but i dont know anyone who had service through them.
