more commonly known as a hippie van, i want to buy one for my son (hes turning 16) and i dont know where i could get one

you're going to have to go to either Hemmings, Collector Car Trader, or the collector section of Ebay Motors. it's going to be almost impossible to find one in a specific area, so you need to grealy expand your search if you're ever going to find a decent one.

but my best advice would be to get something else. the old air-cooled VW's require a lot of attention and you're talking about a 40 year old car here, it's NOT a good idea to make this a daily driver(especially for a 16 year old). if you or your son don't know how to work on cars, then this is a bad idea considering the repair costs. old cars aren't exactly reliable, and you'll need constant minor repairs and tweaks just to keep it running properly. all this can add up, especially considering the cost of parts. plus he's going to be new to driving, and if he gets in a fender bender, you'll be spending a decent bit of money for replacement sheetmetal. another factor is winter driving. if you have bad winters in your area and your roads are salted, then that salt is going to make your floorpan rust out very, very quickly. salt corrosion in old VW's is a much bigger factor than newer cars. if your state has inspections, then a gaping rusthole in your floorpan is definitely doing to be a problem. the cost alone is going to be a major issue, the old buses sell for a decent bit of cash these days and most are collectors' items. even if you find a cheap one with a lot of rust, it's going to take a LOT of cash to get it back together.

why not just get him an old Chevy panel van? they're a lot easier to find and they cost a lot less.
