Where did the rumor that redheads are going extinct originate?

Red hair is caused by a genetic mutation; therefore, it is a GENETIC trait so we redheads aren't going extinct. Can anyone tell me where it originated? If you can, give me a link to a site. In advance: sorry, I don't want Wikipedia.
Also, just as an aside, ginger is not red so stop calling redheads gingers you jackasses.

I don't think it is a rumor. I remember my prof talking about it once and I think she said that it was recessive and slowly over hundreds of years red hair will be gone.

This is a misconception. Redheads will never completely die out, there will just be fewer and fewer of them.

Here's an article written by a geneticist at Stanford School of Medicine, I'd say that is a pretty legitimate source....

Idk if it's a rumor exactly. I read an article in a National Geographic magazine that said the gene that causes red hair is getting rarer, and I'm not too surprised about that. I mean, humans change. That's why we are so successful. Our genes change as we intermix with each other. I'm sure red hair isn't the only trait that's decreased throughout human existance. I think as people intermarry more and more, and combine dominant genes, then more recessive traits like red hair are naturally going to decrease. However, as long as brunettes and blondes are mating, I'm sure it's in no danger. Either way, there's not much anyone can do about it, in my opinion.
