Most TJ trans leaks are from the seal between the transmission and the transfer case. There is a parts charge of under 50.00 and the rest would be labor. The job calls for 4.5 hours of labor, so the price should be around 500.00 or less. Take it to a different mechanic and have a second opinion and estimate done..

I took it to a mechanic because it's steadily dripping after i've been driving a while, coming to a stop after my Jeep has been off for a couple of hours. He told me something like the transmission was coming apart where it joins somewhere. I looked under my Jeep and I see a plate beneath my transmission with giant bolts on it and it appears to be leaking in that area. The mechanic told me it'd run around $1,500 to repair. Does that sound right? Would it be a better idea to just get a used transmission from a junkyard and have a mechanic install it?
