I have been a fan of Dragonball Z for a long time I grew up on the ones that funimation used to air on Cartoon Network. I have been wanting to buy a dvd version of the series for awhile now but was unsure of whether to get the Dragon Boxes or the remastered seasons.
What I like about the Dragon Boxes:
- Quality is about as perfect as it gets on dvd
- Very nice packaging and bonus items (book)
What I don't like:
- No english translations for text in the show and no american soundtrack. These new Dragon Boxes are mainly for the American fans who want the original Japanese version of the series which means that the title cards for the show haven't been translated to english and none of the american soundtrack is included (This is perfectly fine but I want to watch the show the way I watched it as a kid)
- The Dragon Boxes AREN'T all out yet! Probably won't be finished until this time next year and probably another 2 years after that for them to get around to releasing Dragon Boxes for DB and DBGT
What I like about the Remastered:
- The entire DB/Z/GT series is currently available so if I wanted I could sit and watch it all the way through
- The series would look uniform on a shelf (I like little details like that)
- It has the american soundtrack for the show (as well as the japanese soundtrack) english translation and is basically what I got used to watching as a kid
What I don't like:
- I HATE that they butchered the visuals for the DBZ set by trying to make it appear more modern
Cropped the picture from a 4:3 to a 16:9 which cuts out 20% of the picture and causes characters and objects to be cut out of the frame
Made the colors alot more bolder to the point where they look oversaturated (Colors are also changed here and there)
Details and some scenes are also very blurry and sometimes lines of animation that are part of the characters have been accidentally removed
I'm really not sure what to get as the remastered are the ones I would love to purchase (if it weren't for them f'ing up the picture in the process) and it's the version I grew up on as a kid. I like the Dragon Boxes for their authenticity but they aren't all available at the moment. I'm really not sure what to buy. At the moment I'm leaning towards the remastered sets. What do people think? Does anyone know if they are doing another batch of releases after this?
I personally don't care much for Dragonball Z Kai they cut out too much in my opinion. Wouldn't mind it for Frieza saga. I was thinking of buying the remastered sets for now until they release another set that has everything I want or picking up the Dragon Boxes in a few years when they are all released. As for the movies I already have some of the dvds and have watched them like crazy so I'll probably get those later when a good set for them has come out
