I am filling in my self assessment. I use my own car for work, I would say I use it 90% work and 10% personal use. I only get paid 20 pence per mile from the company I work for (I am still classed as self employed though). I have claimed up to 40 pence per mile as tax relief for the first 10,000 miles which the HMRC website says you are allowed to do. Colleagues have told me you are also allowed to claim stuff like insurance, tax, MOT and tyres etc as expenses too. My Dad who's helped me fill in my form said I am not allowed to do this as that is what the 40pence per mile relief is for. I am confused and don't want to pay more tax than I have to, can any one help me on this? thanks in advance x
