I'm just looking for a basic combat-orientated martial art that teaches punching, kicking, and all the right spots to hit. I'm not looking so much for a lifestyle change, just something to sharpen up my coordination and confidence, and work on my muscular endurance. Something like what the military teaches is what I'd like. Any suggestions?

Muay Thai, they teach that to Thailand military, there are like 60000 profesionals in thailand, when you can compare it to 2000 profesional american boxers, or tae quon do, they have body guards in south Korea (because gun laws are so strict) who are experts, it's just like the movies where they fight people randomly on the streets. I'm doing Muay Thai, it's a great workout and it looks like street fighting so you can confuse the *** out of people

If striking is your main concern then kickboxing would probably be your best bet. If you would also like to throw some tosses and ground work in there then sambo is the best style in my opinion for real life fight experience. Boxing is great for all around endurance work.

This is the kind of question that you itself must answer, you are the one who knows your capability especially on handling some physical activities.

Besides, style must not be the basis if what to choose, every style has an edge, advantage and disadvantage if we compare them, all you need is a legit instructor that can teach you an efficient skills and knowledge, he can give some important details regarding what he give and discuss.

Just try to visit some Martial Arts training school near your place, observe and ask some important question, maybe through that effort, you can decide what's better for you and not.

Which military? The Israeli military uses Krav Maga, the Chinese military uses Sanda, the Thai military uses Muay Thai, the USMC has its own system, the JGSDF uses Karate. You've really described most martial arts.
