Which musical group in your mind represents the best recreation of New Wave?

Only two rules apply for this question. You CANNOT choose a band that was originally from the 80’s, like Missing Persons or Devo, hence the word “recreation.” Second, it’s got to be New Wave or somehow able to have a compelling case made for its inclusion in the genre. To this point, I haven’t been a huge fan of most of the offerings of the second coming. Bands like The Killers never did it for me. Then I caught theSTART and to put it mildly I was blown away. Please forgive me in advance if I go all Queenadreena on these guys for the next couple of weeks or so, they’re that good.

Persephone! - Give it a couple more weeks of Blink 182 and Jonas Brothers queries and that likely will occur! :-)
– You have to be very specific with the instructions, esp. on a Monday. Thanks, there’s not that many of them right now.
Prof Anger – Great to see you too! Interpol is a good pick, although I’ve always felt they channeled their inner Joy Division or Bauhaus, thus making them closer to the rock critics dreaded category invention of post-punk. theSTART is from your neck of the woods so you’ll have no shortage of opportunities to catch them live. Just caught the tour schedule, I’m jealous!
Mizz SJG – Holy crap, I never would’ve picked you out to be a Neutral Milk Hotel fan. Just when you think you know a riot grrl well! :-)
James M – I have to agree with you in that you can’t go home again. There’s no replicating the original time period.
Adam - Hey, that's OK. If you get a chance, go back and check out some videos by Missing Persons. They're fairly indicative of what New Wave is based not just on the music but the fashion as well. It helped rid us all of the bad taste left by disco.

Well, I'm not sure this is new wave, but I consider them alternative wave...so I vote for Neutral Milk Hotel...here are 2 of their songs below:

Rckets...I like to expand my mind...riot grrl and sweet lil' angel...that's me! lol I even worked at a new wave club in the 80's and hosted Flock of Seagulls, the Violent Femmes, etc...and the drummer of The Psychedelic Furs sat in for my last song during our CROTCH gig 1996. Go figure!

No one can match the hair and synthesizer stylings of the original new wave craze, and I lived in the middle of it. Nice link though...I will have to look for more.....has to better than what is currently out there!

I am a huge 80's New Wave fan, and I have to admit that my knowledge of the recent recreations of the genre are limited. That said, I do enjoy the album "Danse Macabre (2001)" by The Faint. I think this album gets at a similar sound to Depeche Mode.

I like The Lost Sounds.

Interpol is sometimes said to be a serious Joy Division ripoff (I kinda like Interpol in a guilty/not-so-guilty pleasure kind of way though).
