Which tires would be best for winter-snow,ice, and rain?

I have a 2009 chevy HHR and I am going to be driving more this winter, so I decided to get winter tires, I live in chicagoland so it gets nasty, I have firestone tires but I was thinking about getting winter tires put on in the fall. Which tires are the best, with grip and traction and is it a good idea to put different tires on?

I would get some rated as M+S, Mud & Snow.
