Why am I getting sudden power failures? How can I try fixing this?

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop. It is pushing about 2 years old now and I have started to get small intermittent problems but none of them have really been issues until now.

I am running Vista, SP2. I am a college student (digital forensics as it were) so she gets some bumps and bruises from being hauled around but overall I try to take really good care of my computer. Aside from one incident with a very small spill of juice and being moved around so much, I keep everything maintained - updates, security, keeping things dust-free and so on.

Today when I started up my laptop (plugged in to the charger because it had been a while since it was plugged in so the charge was getting low I figured) I noticed it wasn't actually booting, it was off. At first I thought it was me not hitting the button but when I watched the whole process it was turning itself off - even the LEDs for the power connection and battery and so on.
This occurred several times at different points in startup - sometimes I couldn't even get to my BIOS password prompt; sometimes it was just after that, sometimes after the Windows login and so on. Of course it was also popping up those little ''Windows was shut down...so on'' screens but I couldn't keep power long enough to scan anything anyway.
I tried taking out, air-cleaning and replacing my battery which helped for a while. Then it happened again while I was net browsing.
I tried starting up with the battery completely out, just on the power cable...worked for about ten minutes.
I tried starting up just on the battery, same thing.

I'm running low on ideas shy of taking my computer in and letting someone else mess with my baby. Has anyone else got ideas or seen this happen and maybe know what is going on?
