why are airlines so messed up in terms of prices?

I want to try to be flexible about my vacation. like maybe, i like where I am and want to stay a little longer? Why do i always have to have flights that are so rigid and will charge me an arm and a leg in fees to move my flight? It's annoying enough having to book a flight a month in advance, because what i'm doing a month from now isn't really on my mind.

Are there airlines that are more cooperative about this? Does this annoy aynone else?
