Part of the reason why Porsches work so well is that they have rear wheel drive and the engine much farther back than most 'normal' cars. This is an excellent combination for racing and is found on virtually all supercars.

There are a host of factors: obsessive German attention to detail and development, engineering expertise, testing, and more testing, evaluation, racing (it improves the breed), and self-imposed limited production. Along with those elements is a strong refusal to compromise or to accept, "just ok". These people strive for excellence in everything they do, all the time.
