Why can't i view a document from vista in XP?

I typed up a document on a laptop that runs vista in microsoft office and saved on a pen drive. I then inserted the pen drive in my desktop that runs XP. I Brought the pen drive up on the screen and tried to view the document so i could print it and it would not show. Everytime i click any document it shows a screen to save the document instead of opening it up. why does it do this? Does this have something to do with switching between the two systems or could it be the pen drive? The printer is to old and they have not did any updates to make it compatable with vista so i could not print from the laptop.
