With all the space junk orbiting Earth, why can't we launch a satellite tasked with intercepting and collecting some of that junk. Or giving larger pieces a nudge toward Earth so they will fall out of orbit quicker.
I know it would be an expensive mission that may only be able to collect a small amount of the junk, but it seems like the cost would be far less than replacing a communications satellite. Or having a piece hit an orbiting shuttle.
