Why did Salinger choose humor as the tone for the novel?

In the novel the catcher in the rye why did the author choose humor as the tone? How does Salinger’s use of humor contribute to the book’s overall meaning and effect? How would the novel be different if he didn't choose this tactic? I'm doing a novel assignment for english.
