Why do foreign backpackers in China always look awful?

I'm not talking about backpackers in the woods, I mean urban backpackers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. They wear wrinkled clothes and look poverty stricken. The men have unshaven beards and women have unshaven legs. These foreign backpackers often smell bad from 20 feet away. What is wrong with them?
