Why do I need a SSN to get a contract with t-mobile?

I wanted to buy a blackberry curve with t-mobile and when I went everything went fine until they wanted my SSN to open an account, I didn't want to share it with them. They said that if they couldn't recieve my SSN to create an account and get a contract then I would have to buy the phone for around $200 more! What can I do???
