why do Jews believe they are the "chosen people"?

During the horrific invasion last yr of Israel into Gaza, now the Flotilla and 60 years of terrorism by Israel over all its neighbors, why do they refer to themselves as the Chosen People. I researched the Bible, no where in the Bible is the word "jew" or Jewish used until the late 1700's when the Bible was rewritten. No where I could find does the Bible say they are the "chosen ones". They dont believe in Jesus Christ, and no merciful God who created everyone and everything would choose one group over another, its not common sense and is not a fact. If you can prove otherwise please enlighten me.
