why do my pork ribs smell funny when cooking?

They smelled funny when removing the membrane and fat. I thought it was strange but that the smell might just cook out. They still smell funny, even with the rub and cooking for five hours at 225 degrees in the oven. I tasted a little piece and it seemed to taste ok but my wife thought it had a bit of a gamy taste.
 
If they smelled "funny" when they were raw and you were removing the fat, then they have started to spoil.

I would not eat them.

Trace back and see how long you had them on hand before you cooked them. Also, check the label (if you still have it) to see if there was a "sell by" date. Sometimes the stores repackage stuff.
