why do so many christians try to use "thats from the old testament" as an excuse

to questions? many times a christian will try to avoid a question they dont like by saing "thats old testament" as if the old testament can be totally dismissed a part of some 'other religion' that has nothing to do with their religion. yet they still believe the genesis story that is in the old testament and all other kinds of things that are in the old testament.

is the old testament, the part of the bible you only believe when there are no atheists questioning you and its convenient to believe it?

even when jesus is quoted in the new testament as saying the old testament is still valid.
 
Because it's true, some of the teachings of the old testament have been made obsolete by the new testament, it's just a fact
 
I usually reply with.
Jesus said he did not come to remove the old testament.
Meaning that they should follow the old testament just as well.
 
I believe the Old Testament just as much as the New Testament.

However, there are a few things in the NT that override the OT.

In which case, I dismiss the old commandment.

If there is no new commandment, I follow the old.

Simple. Gentile believers in Jesus Christ were never under the laws given, by God, to Moses, for the Hebrews.

Even when the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by asking Him what the most important commandment was, Jesus said to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind, and love your neighbor as yourself. In these two things, He added, are all the laws and the prophets fulfilled.

Those things we are to observe, as believers in Christ, are clearly taught in the new testament. The Jews has to keep over 300 laws! We do not do that anymore; Jesus fulfilled the law, therefore our righteousness comes from faith in Him.
 
In the old testament sin was filling the world, now there is a new testament because God cared for us and loved us so much he sent Jesus to die for us, so whosoever accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior are saved from the wrath of God and do not need to punish their sins in hell like in the old testament.
 
The OT is definitely part of the bible...its the history of the bible and a time when the law was in effect. You cant understand the New Testament if you dont know the OT. I read and study the OT and NT..there's not one part of the bible that is not important.

Christians always come up with one cop out excuse or another.

here are some of my favorites: Those arent true/real christians.
Thats the old testament. Pagans stole from christians, not the other way around.
We'll see who is right when we die, wont we? Then youll be sorry! Why is everyone persecuting us? Jesus said they will hate us first.

There are more than these, but these are some real gems from christian fundies.
