It's become apparent to me on here that a lot of Christians seem to fear homosexuality and homosexuals. Often even more than murderers or rapists or Muslims.
What is there to fear?
Myth No 1 - Homosexuality is a lifestyle choice
Homosexuality is as much a choice as heterosexuality is. Try forcing yourself to imagine a sexual encounter with a same sex partner. If you dare. Repugnant? If it is, that's how a homosexual feels about an opposite sex one. If you kinda like it then maybe you might be gay too.
I've tried this and I'm straight. But I'd have explored further if I wasn't. There's nothing wrong with it.
Myth No 2 - Gays are Atheist
Utter rubbish. Homosexuality exists everywhere. In all religion, cultures and in every part of the world. Openly homosexual clergy are now gaining acceptance. They don't preach or "infect" their congregation. And, actually, break down ignorances within Christian society when people see them as normal individuals.
Myth No 3 - Homosexuals are rapists
I've many gay friends, of both sexes, and we have a mutual respect for each other's sexuality. Stories of them attempting to convert or even rape straight people are ridiculous. You only have to look at crime figures to see that heterosexual rape is far more prevalent than male-male rape.
Myth No 4 - Homosexual people can "fit-in" and lead heterosexual lives
This is most damaging. How would you feel if your partner of 20 years turned out to prefer their own sex? Would they be able to love someone of the opposite sex fully if their true desires were with the same sex? This attitude is harmful for both homosexual people and the heterosexual people that they partner off with. A homosexual person can't fulfil the desires of a heterosexual one.
Myth No 5 - Homosexuals promote homosexuality
In my experience, the only people who promote homosexuality are people who think it's a choice and try it out. Nothing wrong with exploring your sexuality but people who just think it's fashionable and shocking often like to try to become involved in it and want everyone to know about it. But born homosexuals who are happy with their sexuality tend to rarely ever bring the subject up. Far less than heterosexuals in reality.
It just seems that a common Christian trait seems to be an ignorance is bliss approach. A fear that if they actually considered it then they'd become "infected". Label something they don't understand as "bad" and it is easily dealt with.
Homosexuality doesn't threaten heterosexual people unless one chooses a heterosexual partner to fit into this "normal lifestyle" that you are creating and promoting.
So look at it that way. Your partner could be gay but has to constantly try hard to "fit in".
