Why do transatlantic flights travel together?

I noticed recently that London Gatwick/Caribbean flights outward and return
to and from exact same destinations travel in fours or twos, departing or landing in the
same minute. These are different airlines & different terminals at same airport. This also applies to USA/UK flights that arrive in the morning. Is there some slot the different airlines have to use to conform to night flight restrictions? Or is it so they can be more easily monitored travelling together? How close do they fly to each other?
