Why does a canceled torrent download take up space?

So I've never used torrents before and thought I'd try it. The file was 9 gigs. After beginning the download (using Miro on my Mac) I noticed that my hard drive immediately had 9 gigs less space than it had had the minute before. Well, the download was going at about 1 Kb/second so I just canceled it. HARDLY ANYTHING WAS DOWNLOADED, yet my system still tells me that 9 gigs worth of space was used up. What is going on?

I already deleted Miro and every cache and download folder I could find. I have used the spotlight to get rid of anything with the word "miro" or "torrent." But after all that, I've only managed to free up a few megs. Anyone know what is going on here?
