Why does my dog always fetch me a toy when she greets me?

My golden retriever is always thrilled to see me come home (as most dogs are) and always, without fail, stuffs her mouth with the nearest toy to bring to me. She's doesn't really try to give it me, and turns her head away if I reach for it, she just likes to carry it in her mouth like a dummy, why?

NB: I'd just like some theories on this, not how to 'correct it' or anything else.
I am aware she is a golden RETRIEVER, however she is not the slightest bit interested in feching balls or toys, unless they are less than 5 metres away and I have a biscuit. And when she does retrieve, she always drops is straight away without any command.
thanks for your theories on playing, but I'm not so sure. I know my dog, once she has done her little hello ritual, she likes to park on her bed and go to sleep again. Not sure she would if playtime was on her mind...

You've been at work all day, and she's been at home all day, watching the soaps, eating bon bons, and doing household chores. You walk in the door, and its PLAYTIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've seen so called "animal experts" that say you're supposed to ignore your pet when they greet you at the door, to show you're in charge. I say that is crap. They come to the door to say "Hi, I'm happy to see you", and you're supposed to ignore it? BS. They love you no matter what and I say you should return the favour. Even if you're tired coming in, taking a few minutes to play "keep away" with your golden girl will make her day, and brighten yours. I say have fun! (and I've always found a certain irony in the fact that 'retrievers' like to play keep away so much...)

Maybe she just wants to play.Whenever my dog wants to play she gets a toy and puts it in her mouth then asks my dad to play with her.

Our goldie does the same thing. she's just playing. ours has been through classes and still doesn't necessarily like to "leave it."

She's happy and she wants you to play with her.Whenever i come home my dogs always try to jump up onto me when im standing up so they can lick my face it's so funny and cute when they do that then my younger dog will go and find a toy, come up to me with it in his mouth i will then go to grab it then he will turn around and run off and then he will come running back to me and then he will give me the confused head to the side look.He will start yelping until i play with him.My dogs go soooo freakin crazy as soon as i step one foot in the door.
