Why does my dog eat CAT POOP?!?

when i take my year old pup out, he ALWAYS manages to take a bite of the cat poop laying around from stray cats. sometimes i try to get it out of his mouth but ive been bitten. i know he can get worms from eating infected cats so WHAT THE HECK? AM I NOT FEEDING HIM ENOUGH NUTRITION? (3 big meals a day) Is he just curious? i always say bad dog! and spank him on the rear time to time but he does not get it...i get so frustrated with him yet, i cannot get mad at him. this is becoming serious problem and i dont wish him stomach worms and other infection. PLEASE HELP! thank you
