Why does my lap top turn off every time I close it?

It's only when I close the screen. It's not while I'm trying to do anything. When I turn it back on it says 'resuming windows' so it's more like going into hibernating mode. If I had anything open it would still be there when turned back on. So what's going on and what can I do to stop it? Also this lap top is less than a year old and doesn't have any viruses or anything.
