Why does my phone freeze up when i pull up the Instant Messanger on my Samsung

Slash Virgin Mobile phone? I have the Samsung Slash from Virgin Mobile and everytime i want to pull up the Instant Messanger it automatically freezes my phone up i always have to restart now it never use to be this way til about a month ago?
