Why does my truck come out of 2 wheel drive and go into 4 Wheel hi.?

I have a 1997 Nissan Hardbody 4x4. I have tried locking the hubs and going in forward and reverse. Nothing seems to do the trick. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks
