Seems to me that is 3 steps. The one step, then TWO to jump. One plus two equals three. Many times players are allowed 4 or even 5 steps. It's strange to me because back when I played, you trained yourself to take two steps and that's it. It just feels weird to take more. This has been a problem since the mid 90's when people started to make such a big deal about dunking. A true dunk or layup is done by jumping off one foot.
I'm not even an NBA fan, but I've seen enough games to know that most times players are allowed at least three steps to the hoop. Not just LeBron... EVERYONE. Did you ever see Shaq back in the day??? The problem is that players have been allowed for years to take one step, then to jump with two feet... especially on dunks. Anymore is usually travelling.
