Why is Fullmetal Alchemist & Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood so different?

If you watched it all, FMA ended with Al with his teacher going somewhere on a train. And Ed in Munich. Then i watch the Brotherhood series and it's like regular again. and some of the characters are played by other ppl. Hughes hasnt died? some characters are not played by the ones from before. CAN SOMEBODY EXPLAIN THIS PLZ?
