Why is it so hard to quit a sport?

My parents signed me up for basketball when I was 5 years old. Now I am in high school and next year is my senior year. I've been tired of playing basketball for a while to the point where I kind of hate playing. So I decided to quit during the school year. I also felt that since I wouldn't play during the year, I shouldn't show up to summer league and let the guys who WANT to play get more minutes. My mom is OK with it, but my dad is really mad. He said he was disappointed and all and said that I would regret it (which is not true since my only regret is continuing to play). For my senior year, I'm already on the Student Council, Co-Chairing one division of our school fair, taking 4 AP courses, joining a club to do community service, playing in the school orchestra, and tutoring every day. It's a decently busy schedule that will take up a lot of my time, but I enjoyed doing these types of activities in my entire high school life. Instead of basketball, I told my dad that I wanted to join the Math Team or participate in Science Bowl, something I REGRET NOT doing. He gives me this look that tells me he thinks I'm retarded for wanting to do that and gets angry at me. He says that if I quit basketball, I should be assigned way more chores around the house (FYI I did do chores before) and that I shouldn't be going out. I guess what I just wondering is why does my dad get so angry at me and try to punish me for quiting a sport. It's not like I'm being lazy since I'm trying to be highly involved in my school and am still going to tryout for something else like volleyball. Is it really that wrong to tell him that I simply don't like just one thing in my life? Is my dad being unfair or am I wrong for wanting to quit? I'm not trying to argue that I'm right, I'm just confused and need to understand before I can move on in life.
