Why is it that transverse waves are said to travel in right angles?

Just need a little help understanding. As far as I'm concerned the waves demonstrated in diagrams do not appear to be right 'angular'. Just need a little clarification. Any help would be greatly appreciated! :DD

The wave energy travels at right angles to the direction of the vibration causing it.
e.g. - vibration is vertical (up/down) - wave travels horizontally
