I went to Tokyo this summer for two months and spent almost three times the amount I planned on spending. I knew that Tokyo would be rather expensive but my home-stay fee were actually pretty reasonable. I should've done a lot more research than I did but once I got to Tokyo, I was hard hit by how expensive the simplest of things were! A simple breakfast costed me 1000yen. And I didn't have to buy for everyday utilities like water and gas...I heard that can get quite scary.
So why is Tokyo and many other Japanese cities such an expensive place to live? Especially if you compare it to the other asian metropolises like Seoul, Taipei or Hong Kong (though HK is quite expensive too!). I know that Tokyo is Tokyo and no other city can offer the samething that it can...but the cost of living there is just scary.
