Why is Madoff getting unjustly punished?

I don't understand why people are making such a big deal about Madoff asking to spend his remaining days out of jail. It isn't like he killed somebody. So he mismanaged some funds. Poor guy has been through a lot. I think he is being villianized above and beyond what is deserved. I know I am in the minority, what do you think?
 
You have a slight misconception here. He didn't mismanage some funds. That would imply that he invested as he told people he would be doing and things didn't come out as well as anticipated due to bad decisions etc.

What he did was fraud. He told people he was investing their money, and just kept it. He paid out some money, yes, but that was just from other people that gave it to him. So, he is guilty of hundreds if not thousands of cases of fraud. Even at 6 months to a year per case, he should be in prison for a very long time.
