My car just recently started overheating. It only happens when in idle. I put in more coolant and it helped for a small amount of time, but then the gauge started climbing again. I took it to my mechanic, and he said that I should keep the A/C on while in idle. It help for a little while, but my thermostat gauge is still higher than it usually is (constantly, not just while in idle) at about 1/4 cm before the middle gauge, and if I'm in idle in traffic for more than 10 mins, it climbs again. I'm afraid to drive my car until it gets fixed. What should I do?

Here are some details about my car:
I drive my car on average about 80-100 miles/day. My car has over 209k.
My heater fan (in the car dash, not the engine) is broken, so it won't blow the A/C air into the cabin (don't know if this matters or not).
My mechanic told me quite some time ago that I have an oil leak. I check my oil regularly and it was fine when I checked it today. My car still occasionally blows out white-ish gray smoke. It did this right around the time it started overheating.

My biggest worry is that this is a water pump/timing belt issue or, worse, a head gasket issue. Please let me know what you think it wrong and give me a cost estimate as well. I'm trying to compare costs and see if I should even bother putting more money into my car. The person who gives me both these answers will be voted best. Thanks all!

Your timing belt has nothing to do with this. I would replace your thermostat and or water pump. Check if there is oil leaking from your engine. It could be a bad head gasket. With white greyish smoke it is your head gasket
