Why is my computer freezing.?

My computer is freezing ever so often, please help me. When it started freezing I ran a complete scan on avast and it froze while in the process. Also when I tried de-fragmenting the local drive it froze as well. When de-fragmenting the registry it did so but did not stop my computer from freezing. Please help me. P.S My computer is windows XP and the anti - virus installed is Avast. Thanks in advance.
