Why is my external hard drive affecting my computer from connecting to the internet?

I used my new external hard drive with my 2 computers and each stopped connecting to the internet. I had to perform a system restore on both to get back on track. The drive is a FAT32 - Could this be affecting the computer? Should I convert the drive?
