Why is my internet so much slower than the speed test says?

Hi, my download speeds usually hang around roughly 500kb/s but sometimes up to about 700kb/s but when I did the speed test here http://www.speedtest.net/ it said that my download speed is 6380kb/s. This is for normal downloads not torrents. Is there a known reason for this?

I think it may because of internet traffic or while downloading huge files the speed may Differ from actual speed...Without downloading anything you can check the speed of the internet really you know the Difference in speed..You can check the internet speed at here Scanmyspeed.com it shows speed in Mbps and MBps.
