Why is my iPhone service jumping from full bars to no bars?

This is the second phone in a row that is doing this. Apple is going to replace it again, but I really think there might be a software issue. My phone can be lying in the same spot and have full bars for two hours and then will have no service for two hours. It is not a network issue, my husband has the same carrier (AT&T) and is not losing service. Plus I called them and they said everything is correct on the account. I replaced the SIM card just to be safe. I have restored as a new iPhone four times. Reset the network settings several times. Reinstalled iTunes on my computer (using a PC - Windows XP). Cleared all the apps and other media. Is it really possible that my bad luck got me two replacement phones in a row that have a bad connection? Or am I more than likely going to receive the third replacement phone and the same thing happen? This is extremely frustrating. The first replacement phone was sent when the volume button broke on my original iPhone - I am starting to wish I had kept that one - I might not have been able to control the volume from the side, but at least the service was reliable. It is almost as if the phone gets hot and loses service. I know this sounds crazy - any ideas? Could it be a bad file? If so, how do I fix it? PLEASE HELP ME - I think Apple has a conspiracy to drive me crazy.
