Why is my SUV's steering wheel hard to turn?

There was a snow storm the other day and I drove the next day and I kept sliding around on the road. After a while my steering wheel became hard to turn. So I went back home and figured maybe there is some snow caught up there and I will let it melt. Next day I started it up and still the same problem. I also noticed that eveytime I turn the car on a message pops up on the dash saying ice possible. Could this be a problem with one of the cars safety features or power steering, please help me out here and if you could give me an idea what to look for to see if a part went bad.
 
Either Your Power Steering Fluid Froze OR Your Power Steering Has A Leak. If It Is Electric, It Went Out Or Has A Bad Wire.
 
well sometimes there is problems like your tires are stuck in the snow and this is could be a problem but the dash board message just means that there is snow or ice on the ground but i think you should get your car checked for the steering wheel problem and also your tires need chains in that kind of severe weather please try to get chains or you could ahve a faital crash out there
 
Check the power steering fluid Laval. also check and see if the belt is still on your power steering pump. If your pump is pumping and you have fluid,you have a restriction or something is binding up. My bet is the pump. As far as message,if it is bellow freezing it will come on.
 
OK, power steering fluid doesn't freeze. And the ice possible lite MAY just mean the outside temp is like 32 deg. Read the manual. It'll tell you all about the lite. Yea, you know, the manual. That thing in the glove box! And maybe it's steering harder because it's colder outside. When there is snow on the road, you will slide around! SLOW DOWN! Also, did you check the steering fluid? Does it sound noisier than what it used to? Every couple of weeks, turn off the radio and listen to your car, so you know what it's supposed to sound like, and if some new sound is there that wasn't there b4. And is your suv a 4x4? Careful, because although 4 wheel drive is great for going in the snow, you still have to stop and turn, and 4 wheel drive relatively speaking doesn't change those things from a regular car.
