Why is there a laser on my battery powered atomic clock?

There is an attachment on the clock which rotates 180 degrees and has a laser that shows the time (when shown on a surface). Why is this necessary? It's right next to the main display -- which you would see before you ever see the laser anyway. Tell me why!
