The Los Angeles Lakers will soon announce that they have hired Mike D’Antoni to be their new head coach. D’Antoni will replace Mike Brown, who the Lakers fired after only five games. Although the Lakers flirted with Phil Jackson, I believe D’Antoni is the right man for the job.
First of all, Jackson is great. In fact, he’s best NBA coach of all-time. Hell, he’s probably the best coach in any sport ever.
That said, D’Antoni is simply a fantastic fit for these Lakers. He will give the ball to Steve Nash and Kobe Bryant and have his two future Hall of Fame guards do the creating. He’ll also utilize Pau Gasol and Dwight Howard in pick-and-rolls.
Even though D’Antoni isn’t a good defensive coach, that won’t matter much. When totally healthy, Howard will be able to anchor the defense by himself. Add in other good defenders in Bryant, Gasol and the player formerly known as Ron Artest, and the Lakers will be fine on D.
The bottomline: With Mike D’Antoni as coach, the Lakers will win the NBA championship.
