Why should I install Linux in my PC ?

Well I'm doing engineering in Computer Science branch and still in first year, so CS related subjects aren't taught yet. I hear a lot about Linux OS and why windows sucks etc etc but I'm unable to figure out why should I install Linux in my laptop as I've done just some C programming and had no problems in Windows OS. They say Linux is open source but windows is not. Can you give me any practical example what being "open source" means ? I know in "open source" I can change source code but I'm not clear about it. Can you explain it in a simple way for a "just started programming" guy like me ? Thanks in advance.
